Sinusitis is a very common condition that is experienced by millions of people in the US, including children. This condition arises from the inflammation of the sinuses due to viral, bacterial, and various kinds of other infections. :)

Are You Sure that Your Child Has Sinusitis?

Various kinds of upper respiratory tract infections are commonly mistaken as sinusitis. Symptoms like runny nose, green or yellow mucus discharge, coughing, fever, headache, fatigue and facial swelling are among the signs that your child (or even an adult) has a respiratory infection. But these symptoms do not necessarily point to sinusitis as the culprit. When your child is just experiencing a common cold or seasonal allergies, then there may be no need to consider sinusitis treatment options such as antibiotics.

Are you sure that antibiotics can cure your child's sinusitis? If you do find out from your doctor that your child has sinusitis, you should not assume immediately that you can use antibiotics to treat the sinus infection. Antibiotics are only used for sinusitis caused by bacteria, parasites and some types of fungi.

What kind of dosage and treatment schedule is appropriate for children with sinusitis? Upon reviewing the factors involved in choosing a treatment program for your child's sinusitis, if your doctor may still end up suggesting antibiotics. In this case, you need to make sure you are given the right instructions for the medicine's use. Usually, children are prescribed with antibiotics while they are experiencing symptoms, and up to 7 more days after feeling better from sinusitis. A high dosage can be given, but long term use should be avoided. You do not want your child's immune system to become used to having antibiotics - this can result to having bacteria that are resistant to the medication's effects. Antibiotic Overuse

There are several medications and other treatments that are meant to offer relief for sphenoid sinusitis infection. One of the most frequently prescribed and purchased treatments are oral medications such as antibiotics, decongestants, and anti-fungals. Oral medications work on infections and other problems by flowing through the blood stream to the infected area. And sphenoid sinus cavities there are very small amount of blood vessels. Since the oral medications use the blood stream to travel to the area where they are needed, only a small amount of the medication can be delivered to the sinusitis inflammation diet may lead to little or no relief from the treatment. Also since these medications use the blood stream, it then is distributed through out the rest of the body also which can lead to many side effects such as stomach pain, drowsiness, amongst many others depending on which type of medication is being used.

There are also many treatments which are directly distributed into the sinus cavities. These treatments are generally meant to help moisten the cilia so that it can flush out the trapped mucus and bacteria. Nasal sprays are commonly used and can be prescribed or purchased over the counter. The nasal sprays may offer some relief to the lower part of acute sinus problems pathology times may not help the infection since their particle sizes are too large to make it past the inflammation at the opening of the sinus cavities and up to the sinusitis infection. The same holds true for a treatment called irrigation which distributes saline up to the sinus cavities. Irrigation is also very messy and generally unsuccessful in offering relief. The sources used for the information for this article on Sinusitis are all dependable ones. This is so that there be no confusion in the authenticity of the article.

The symptoms of an acute sinusitis infection generally may include cough, congestion, facial pain and pressure, green nasal discharge, and postnasal drip. When the sinusitis infection becomes chronic and lasts for twelve or more weeks a person may experience additional symptoms such as loss of sense of taste and smell and fatigue may also occur. Other symptoms may also occur depending on which sinus cavity that the infection lies in.

Newer treatment that is used nasally is aerosolized medications. Aerosolized medications are used very much like nebulized asthma medications. These antibiotics, anti-fungals, and anti-inflammatories are broken down into a small particle size so that it can pass the inflammation and make its way up to the sinusitis infection. Generally a small amount of these medications are used which results in little to no side affects in the rest of the body. It was with great relief we ended writing on Sinusitis Infections. There was just too much information to write, that we were starting to lose hopes on it's completion!

Sinusitis infection usually is caused by a cold or an allergy. When a cold or allergy occurs, swelling of the sinus cavity lining happens. When bacteria enter the sinus cavities, they attack the swollen lining which then causes greater inflammation. The cilia is a part of the sinuses which usually flushes out the bacteria and mucus. When a great amount of inflammation occurs, the cilia can no longer function as it should and so the bacteria and mucus become trapped in the cavities which then causes the sinusitis infection to occur.

The proper medical term for a sinus infection is sinusitis. Because a sinus infection has many symptoms that are similar to those of a cold or the flu, to proper diagnose sinus infection by yourself is quite difficult. A sinus infection can also be in many cases, the result of a infection in your upper respiratory system. However, there are some signs of a sinus infection that are specific to this ilness. Here are some tips in how to make the difference between a sinus infection of the flu, or just a cold.

Sinus Infection can be Caused by Bacteria or Viruses

In many sinus infection cases, both a bacteria and viruses are the ones to blame. For example, when you catch a cold, your sinuses may also get inflammated, thus you can develop a viral sinus infection. However, because of the inflammation, bacteria could also get caught up in your sinuses and you could develop a bacterial sinus infection. This particular illness, sinus infection can also be acute or chronic. Chronic sinus infection is much worse than acute sinus infection and it is harder to treat. When you have more than three episodes of sinus infection a year and the period of the illness is much longer than two months, then you are probably suffering from chronic sinus infection. There are just some fact sheets that you need to know about sinus infection. Now, you must learn to make the difference between sinus infection, allergies and the flu, or the cold. If you do not have any fever, you feel no pain in your body but you are sniffing a lot, there is nothing to worry about. You do not have a sinus infection, but allergies. This is not contagious. However, if you have a fever, your body aches, you feel tired all the time and are sniffing, then you should take care of yourself. These are not signs of a sinus infection, but a cold or probably the flu. You are contagious in the first few days, so you should avoid any contact with people. Coughing, chills and sweat can also indicate the flu, not a sinus infection. The length of an article is rather immaterial about its response from people. People are more interested in the matter about Sinus Infection, and not length. ;)
